The Humber Bibliography

The Humber Estuary, UK, is home to a wide range of valuable wildlife habitats and species, the national and international importance of which have long been recognised through statutory site protection. It is also located within some of the country’s most productive farmland, is a major industrial centre and home to over a third of a million people. This raises a number of management challenges and research opportunities. It is therefore of fundamental importance that the wealth of information already available on the Estuary’s natural features & characteristics and on land use in and around the site is easily identifiable to assist those involved in all aspects of life on the estuary. This includes the statutory bodies with responsibilities for its management (including English Nature, the Environment Agency and Local Authorities), to those with industrial, research, recreational or community interests.

In partnership with English Nature, the Institute of Estuarine & Coastal Studies (IECS) based at the University of Hull have developed the ‘Humber Bibliography’ as a comprehensive database of references relating to the physical and biological characteristics and features of the estuary, as well as land use in and around the estuary, including the tidal rivers and coast from Skegness to Scarborough. The bibliography (currently containing over 3,000 references including grey literature) has now been available to everyone since its initial launch in August 2002, and can be searched using a variety of fields including author, date, title and keywords, and contains full reference details. It is hoped that this database will provide an invaluable management, research and educational tool.
